Abstract: “Get out now or risk the consequences.” Those were the words of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a new series of threats aimed at “companies aiding and abetting Russia’s malign influence projects.” The Russian influence project is the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is nearing completion under the Baltic Sea. The Nord Stream 2 is a liquified natural gas (LNG) pipeline that connects Russia with the German port town, Sassnitz, in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With only ninety miles of pipeline left on August 28, the Trump administration has upped the pressure, threatening swift, economic action against Germany and anyone who helps Russia bring the project to completion. Nord Stream 2 will be the second pipeline linking Russian LNG to Europe, providing a steady income stream to Russian coffers while cutting off LNG revenue from Russian enemy, the Ukraine Combined with the already completed Nord Stream pipeline, both pipelines will supply Europe with Russian LNG at a rate of 110 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
